L-Citrulline in MemoHoney: What Readers Over 50 Should Know

Quick answer

Each MemoHoney capsule carries two citrulline salts, HCl and malate at 100 mg apiece, so the citrulline itself totals under 200 mg. Your kidneys convert most of it to arginine. Studies on blood pressure gave 3 to 9 g daily, at least 15 capsules' worth. No study tested it for memory. Check with your doctor if you take nitrates, ED pills or blood pressure medicine.

Is L-citrulline good for memory after 50?

No study we could find says it is. None of the sources behind this page tested L-citrulline for memory, recall or focus in healthy older adults, at the small amount in MemoHoney or at any amount.

The nearest thing is one WebMD sentence: early human studies "hint" that citrulline could help in Parkinson's disease and certain dementias. It names no trial, gives no dose and reports no result (WebMD, L-citrulline: Uses and Risks). A hint like that cannot support a buying decision.

The wider evidence points the same way. An AARP-convened expert panel (Global Council on Brain Health (AARP), The Real Deal on Brain Health Supplements) says science does not back any supplement to prevent, slow, reverse or stop the loss of thinking skills with age.

Check this before any capsule. Forgetting a name and recalling it later is common with age. Losing things often, missing appointments, or getting mixed up about time, people or places are reasons to see a doctor, since causes such as medicine side effects or low vitamin B12 can be treated (NIA, Forgetfulness: Knowing When to Ask for Help).

What is L-citrulline, and what does the body do with it?

L-citrulline is an amino acid, not a vitamin or a mineral. Despite the sound of the name, it has nothing to do with oranges or lemons.

Its main role here is to become something else. According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, the kidneys turn roughly four-fifths of the body's citrulline into arginine, and supplements might lift blood levels of nitric oxide byproducts (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Exercise and Athletic Performance (health professional)). WebMD describes the same kidney route.

That explains why the label pairs it with arginine, and why the two share most of their cautions. The arginine side of the formula has its own write-up on our L-arginine page. And to settle a common question: there is no honey in MemoHoney. The citrulline is listed as two amino acid salts, nothing from a hive.

Why does MemoHoney list citrulline twice? HCl and malate in plain words

Because the maker used two salt forms of one amino acid. L-citrulline HCl is citrulline paired with hydrochloride; L-citrulline malate is citrulline paired with malic acid. Each line weighs 100 mg with its partner included.

So one capsule holds less than 200 mg of actual citrulline. We do not print an exact share, because no page we opened gives one. Turn each sheet over to see what was studied and what to watch for:

Salt form one

L-citrulline HCl

Citrulline hydrochloride

100 mg on the panel. Hydrochloride is part of that weight, so the citrulline inside is less than 100 mg.

L-citrulline HCl: the research

Studied at
Plain L-citrulline at 3 to 9 g a day for 1 to 17 weeks, in small blood pressure trials
What studies found
The top blood pressure number fell about 4 mm Hg on average; memory was not measured
Watch for
Nitrate heart medicines, ED pills and blood pressure pills
In MemoHoney
100 mg by weight, once a day
The flat MemoHoney label with the Supplement Facts box on the right listing L-citrulline malate 100 mg

Salt form two

L-citrulline malate

Citrulline bound to malic acid

100 mg on the panel. Malic acid makes up part of the weight, so again the citrulline is under 100 mg.

L-citrulline malate: the research

Studied at
8 g taken one hour before exercise tests, in studies lasting 1 to 16 days
What studies found
The NIH review found little backing for citrulline as a performance aid
Watch for
The same as the HCl form, because it is the same amino acid
In MemoHoney
100 mg by weight, once a day
Two MemoHoney bottles with gold honeycomb labels, 30 capsules each

What one capsule gives

Citrulline in total

L-citrulline

Under 200 mg from both lines together. The label does not print the exact figure, and no source we opened gives it.

Citrulline in total: the research

Studied at
3 g a day at the lowest trial dose, which is 15 capsules' worth of salt weight
What studies found
No source tested citrulline for memory at any amount
Watch for
Ask a pharmacist if you take any heart or blood pressure medicine
In MemoHoney
Less than 200 mg a day at the label dose

Supplement makers sell citrulline either plain or as citrulline malate. They are the same nutrient in two wrappers, not two ingredients with separate effects.

How many grams of L-citrulline did blood pressure studies use?

Between 3 and 9 grams a day. A 2019 review pooled 8 small trials, each with 12 to 34 people, that gave L-citrulline for 1 to 17 weeks (Avicenna J Phytomed 2019, Barkhidarian et al., L-citrulline and blood pressure meta-analysis).

Across those trials the top number (systolic) dropped by about 4.1 mm Hg. The bottom number (diastolic) shifted, by about 2.75 mm Hg, only where daily doses reached 6 g or higher. The authors chose the word "may". Here is each research amount turned into MemoHoney capsules:

The label caps use at one capsule a day, so MemoHoney never nears any amount here, and none of these studies looked at memory. Every printed line is on our supplement facts page.

Can you take L-citrulline with blood pressure pills or heart medicines?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start. Citrulline can lower blood pressure at trial doses, and each MemoHoney capsule also holds arginine, so the cautions add up. Select each item for the detail:

Talk to your prescriber first

Nitrates and ED pills

WebMD advises against citrulline with nitrate heart medicines such as nitroglycerin, and warns that pairing it with ED pills like sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil could send blood pressure dangerously low.

Use caution

Blood pressure pills

WebMD urges care with any blood pressure medicine. Citrulline lowered the top number in trials, so it could stack on top of the pills you already take.

Applies to the arginine in the same capsule

A recent heart attack

Mayo Clinic says L-arginine is not recommended after a recent heart attack. In the VINTAGE MI trial, people given about 9 g of arginine a day had 6 deaths, against none on placebo.

Label caution

Pregnancy, nursing, under 18

WebMD does not advise citrulline while pregnant or breastfeeding. The label itself asks expectant and nursing mothers, plus anyone younger than 18, to check with a physician.

Sources: (WebMD, L-citrulline: Uses and Risks), (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine), (JAMA 2006, Schulman et al., L-arginine after heart attack (VINTAGE MI)). Citrulline by itself looks gentle: WebMD lists no reported side effects, and in one NIH-reviewed study 6 of 41 weightlifters had an upset stomach. The list for the whole capsule is on our side effects page.

What should readers over 50 lean on instead of citrulline?

Not on the citrulline in MemoHoney. The label is open about both salts, yet the dose sits far below every studied amount, and memory was never the question those studies asked.

If memory is the worry, Mayo Clinic's list starts elsewhere: regular physical activity, mental and social activity, good sleep, staying organized, a diet built on fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and a review of your medicines with a professional (Mayo Clinic, Memory loss: 7 tips to improve your memory). The other label lines are compared on our MemoHoney ingredients page.

L-citrulline questions from readers over 50

Can L-citrulline clear brain fog after 50?

No source we read shows that it can. WebMD briefly mentions Parkinson's disease and some forms of dementia without doses or results, and no trial tested a capsule like this one.

How many MemoHoney capsules would equal a citrulline study dose?

At least 15 a day to reach the 3 g low end of the blood pressure trials, and at least 30 to reach 6 g. The label allows one capsule a day, so the study amounts are out of reach by design.

Is L-citrulline safe for seniors who have high blood pressure?

Ask first. Citrulline lowered the top blood pressure number in trials, and WebMD urges caution when it is combined with any blood pressure medicine, because the effects can add up.

Can I take L-citrulline if I carry nitroglycerin?

Talk to your prescriber before you do. WebMD advises against using citrulline with nitrate medicines, and the arginine in the same MemoHoney capsule carries the same warning on Mayo Clinic's page.

Why does MemoHoney have two kinds of citrulline?

The maker used two salt forms of one amino acid, 100 mg of each. HCl and malate are partners that make the powder stable; they do not turn citrulline into two different nutrients.

Is L-citrulline a vitamin?

No. It is an amino acid. Your kidneys turn most of it into arginine, another amino acid, so it has no Daily Value on the label.

Does the citrulline in MemoHoney come from honey?

No. The label lists no honey at all, despite the name and the honeycomb artwork. The citrulline appears as two amino acid salts.

How long did the citrulline blood pressure studies last?

Between 1 and 17 weeks, at 3 to 9 g a day. None ran for years, and none measured memory, so they cannot tell you what a small daily capsule does over a long stretch.
