L-Arginine in MemoHoney: What Adults Over 50 Should Check First
Quick answer
MemoHoney holds under 400 mg of L-arginine across two label lines. Research used 2 to 24 g a day, mostly for blood pressure, chest pain and exercise, and none showed better memory. The bigger issue after 50 is safety: arginine can stack with blood pressure, nitrate, sildenafil and diabetes medicines, and it is not advised after a heart attack.

Is L-arginine safe for older adults?
For a healthy adult it is usually well tolerated: Mayo Clinic calls L-arginine generally safe (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). The picture changes once heart history and daily prescriptions enter it.
MemoHoney prints arginine on two lines, 200 mg of the base form and 200 mg of arginine AKG, so one capsule carries under 400 mg. That is small next to research doses. Still, none of the sources names an amount below which the warnings stop applying.
Which medicines can clash with L-arginine?
Six groups come up in the medical pages we read. Tap each one around the bottle to see what can happen.

Added lowering
Blood pressure pills
Arginine can lower blood pressure on its own, and on top of a prescription the effect may add up. Memorial Sloan Kettering says taking both may not be safe (Memorial Sloan Kettering, Arginine (About Herbs)), and RxList rates the pairing Major.
Nitroglycerin, isosorbide
Nitrates
The heart medicines people keep for chest pain. Mixed with arginine they can bring more dizziness (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)), and Mayo Clinic warns pressure may drop too low.
Viagra, Revatio and similar
Sildenafil-type pills
Mayo Clinic says the combination can drag blood pressure down too far (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). WebMD extends the warning to the whole PDE5 group, tadalafil and vardenafil included (WebMD, L-Arginine).
Blood sugar
Diabetes medicines
L-arginine may lower blood sugar, so with insulin or tablets for diabetes, levels might drop too far (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)).
Anticoagulants, anti-platelets
Blood thinners
Mayo Clinic flags a possible rise in bleeding risk when arginine is added (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).
Potassium-sparing diuretics
Water pills
Amiloride, spironolactone and triamterene can push potassium too high with arginine (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). Ask before combining them.

Why is arginine off the table after a heart attack?
Because a trial in heart attack survivors went badly. In VINTAGE MI, 153 people with an average age of 60 took L-arginine or a dummy pill on top of normal care for six months, aiming at 3 g three times a day (JAMA 2006, Schulman et al., L-arginine after heart attack (VINTAGE MI)).
Arginine did not make arteries less stiff or help the heart pump. Six people on it died during the study; nobody on the dummy pill did. The researchers concluded that doctors should not offer it to people recovering from one.
Three other sources say much the same. Mayo Clinic does not recommend it after a recent heart attack (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine), RxList says not to take it (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)), and Memorial Sloan Kettering warns it may increase the risk of death in that group (Memorial Sloan Kettering, Arginine (About Herbs)).
The trial dose was more than twenty times a capsule. No source tells us whether a much smaller amount is safe for heart patients, so the cautious reading is to ask your cardiologist.
Can L-arginine bring on cold sores?
One drug-information source raises it. RxList explains that the herpes virus seems to need L-arginine to multiply, so extra arginine might make herpes worse (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)).
None of the other three medical references we read raises it, and no amount is given. If you get frequent cold sores or genital herpes, that single warning is enough reason to ask a pharmacist first.
How many grams of L-arginine did studies use?
Every study amount we found is counted in grams. The last column turns each low end into MemoHoney capsules, at a generous 400 mg of arginine per capsule.
| Reason studied | Daily amount | Capsules to reach the low end | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exercise performance | 2 to 20 g | 5 or more | (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Exercise and Athletic Performance (health professional)) |
| High blood pressure | 4 to 24 g, for 2 to 24 weeks | 10 or more | (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)) |
| Erection problems | 5 g a day | 13 or more | (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)) |
| Angina (chest pain) | 3 to 6 g, 3 times a day | 23 or more | (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)) |
| After a heart attack | About 9 g, for 6 months | 23 or more | (JAMA 2006, Schulman et al., L-arginine after heart attack (VINTAGE MI)) |
The label says one capsule a day and do not exceed it, so these totals are not a target. They show the gap. The NIH adds that up to 9 g a day for days or weeks is well tolerated, that 9 to 30 g brought diarrhea and nausea, and that nobody knows about safety past 3 months (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Exercise and Athletic Performance (health professional)). Even at those doses, exercise results were little to none.
Can L-arginine help memory after 50?
There is no good evidence that it can. Of the arginine sources we read, only RxList mentions memory at all: it notes early research on age-related memory loss and grades it as too thin to rate (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)).
The NIH's complementary health center adds that direct evidence of any supplement preventing dementia is lacking (NCCIH, 7 Things To Know About Supplements and Alzheimer's). It also warns against letting a supplement delay a visit, since medicine reactions, depression and thyroid, liver or kidney problems can all affect memory.
What Mayo Clinic does suggest is plain and cheap: stay active, keep the mind busy, see people, sleep well, eat fruit, vegetables and whole grains, and review your medicines (Mayo Clinic, Memory loss: 7 tips to improve your memory). Our memory after 50 guide walks through them.
What does the MemoHoney bottle say about arginine?
Less than an older reader needs. The printed caution never names a medicine. Tap the numbers on the flat label to see what is there and what is missing.

- Directions. One capsule with 8 oz of water, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal.
- Caution. Pregnant or nursing, under 18, or a known medical condition: ask a physician. No drug is named.
- Distributor. Instituto Experience in Ogden, Utah, phone +1 (507) 448-8190. The maker is not named.
- The front claim. ADVANCED MEMORY SUPPORT, with an asterisk. It is a structure claim, not a proven effect.
- Two arginine lines. 200 mg base and 200 mg AKG 2:1: under 400 mg of arginine in all.
- FDA statement. Not evaluated by the FDA; not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease.
The brand's online FAQ goes a step further than the bottle. It asks people on blood pressure medicines, blood thinners or vasodilators to show the label to their doctor before starting. That is good advice, and it should be on the bottle. Our side effects page covers the rest of the capsule.
L-arginine after 50: quick answers
Is L-arginine safe for seniors?
Generally, for healthy adults, says Mayo Clinic. The trouble spots are a past heart attack, low blood pressure and medicines for blood pressure, chest pain, erections, diabetes or blood clotting.
What if I take a water pill such as spironolactone?
Ask first. Mayo Clinic says arginine with potassium-sparing diuretics can raise potassium too high.
Does L-arginine lower blood sugar?
It may. Mayo Clinic and RxList both warn that, with diabetes medicines, sugar could fall too low.
Should I stop L-arginine before surgery?
RxList advises stopping at least 2 weeks before a planned operation. Tell your surgeon about every supplement.
What are the usual side effects of L-arginine?
Nausea, stomach pain, bloating and diarrhea are the common ones. Mayo Clinic also lists gout, headache, allergy and worse asthma.
I have kidney or liver trouble. Does that matter?
WebMD says to tell your provider about kidney or liver problems before using L-arginine. Our sources give no amount that is known to be safe for you.
Does the arginine in one MemoHoney capsule do anything?
No study tested so little. The smallest research dose we found, 2 g, is five times a full capsule.
Is the arginine in food a problem too?
Memorial Sloan Kettering notes that supplement doses are stronger than the arginine in food. The warnings here are about supplements.
